Horseback Riding on the Slopes of the Arenal Volcano

The horseback riding down the slopes of the Arenal Volcano offers a unique perspective on the volcanic landscape, combining Costa Rican equestrian tradition with spectacular views and wildlife encounters. The horses, specially trained for volcanic terrain, allow access to remote areas inaccessible on foot, while providing an authentic experience of the region’s rural culture.
The route crosses traditional cattle farms, regenerating secondary forests, crystal clear rivers and lava fields covered by pioneer vegetation. The equestrian trails are carefully designed to offer panoramic views of the Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal, and the Tilaran Mountain Range, while maintaining the safety of both riders and horses.

During the 2-3 hour horseback ride, participants have frequent opportunities to observe wildlife from the elevated perspective that horseback riding provides. It is common to spot howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws and a variety of birds of prey. Local guides, many of them traditional cowboys, share knowledge about sustainable livestock farming techniques and local history.
The experience includes strategic stops at natural viewpoints, river crossings where horses can drink and cool off, and visits to family farms where participants learn about rural Costa Rican life. Some tours include demonstrations of traditional dairy techniques and tasting of artisanal dairy products.
