The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance, represents one of the most biodiverse wetlands in Costa Rica and one of the most extraordinary wildlife viewing experiences in the country. This boat expedition sails through rivers, lagoons, and canals that form a unique ecosystem where highland and lowland species converge.
The trip begins with a scenic drive to Los Chiles, near the Nicaraguan border, where participants board specialized pontoon-type boats with roofs for sun protection and comfortable seats for 360-degree observation. Bilingual naturalist guides use high-powered telescopes and sound equipment to ensure that all participants can observe and learn about the wildlife sighted.

During the 2.5-hour navigation through the calm waters of the Rio Frio, visitors have exceptional opportunities to observe three species of monkeys (howlers, white-faced, and spider), two species of sloths, large green iguanas, caimans, river turtles, neotropical otters, and an impressive diversity of waterfowl including herons, cormorants, jacanas, anhingas, and the majestic roseate spoonbill.
The refuge is particularly famous for its migratory bird population, especially during the dry season when thousands of birds arrive from North America. Birdwatchers can spot rare species such as jabiru, tiger heron and various species of raptors. The experience includes stops at elevated observation decks that offer 360-degree panoramic views of the wetland.
